About the book

My Fertility Guide is based on my 20 years of clinical experience treating hundreds of patients with fertility problems, and the latest scientific evidence sourced from over 350 peer-reviewed research studies. This self-help guide blends modern fact-based research with the proven theories of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to give you a powerful, practical and easy-to-understand guide to natural conception.

The book is written for anyone who is trying to conceive naturally or with assisted reproduction — whether you are just starting out or have been trying for some time. In my experience treating different types of infertility, I have found that people need far more in-depth information than is typically provided in other fertility books. I have therefore tried to include as much detailed, evidence-based information as possible, presented in a concise and accessible way.

I explain the menstrual cycle in full, how your hormones fluctuate throughout the cycle, when ovulation occurs, how to identify your most fertile days, and the optimal timing for conception. I also cover the process of fertilisation itself — how sperm meet the egg in the fallopian tube and what needs to go right for a pregnancy to establish successfully.

Optimising your environment

One of the most important and frequently overlooked aspects of fertility is the impact of the modern environment on reproductive health. My Fertility Guide explains in detail the various causes of male and female infertility that arise from everyday environmental exposures, including:

  1. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals in food, cosmetics, household products and plastics
  2. Heavy metal toxicity and its effects on egg quality, sperm quality and hormone function
  3. Electromagnetic waves (EMWs) from mobile phones, Wi-Fi and other devices
  4. Air and water pollution and their specific reproductive effects
  5. Pharmaceutical drugs and their known impacts on fertility in both men and women

For each category I give specific, practical advice on how to reduce your exposure and protect your reproductive health.

Optimising your lifestyle

In-depth, evidence-based guidance is given on how to optimise every aspect of your lifestyle for fertility, including exercise, sleep, stress management, work habits, clothing choices and even bathing habits — all based on cutting-edge research alongside the tried and tested principles of Chinese medicine.

I also explain the most important TCM patterns of imbalance that affect fertility — including Kidney deficiency, Liver Qi stagnation, Blood deficiency and Damp-Heat — and how to identify and address your own pattern to improve your fertility potential. This dimension of personalised assessment is unique to the Chinese medicine approach and provides insight that a purely western perspective cannot offer.

Optimising your diet

My Fertility Guide provides detailed pre- and post-ovulation diet plans based on the latest nutritional science and the principles of Chinese food therapy. Specific dietary recommendations are given to support each phase of the menstrual cycle and enhance hormone levels at the times they matter most. A comprehensive supplement guide covers the evidence base for the most important fertility nutrients for both men and women, including their effects on:

  1. Egg quality and ovarian reserve (including low AMH)
  2. Sperm count, motility and morphology (including low sperm count)
  3. Hormone regulation — FSH, LH, oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone
  4. Reducing miscarriage risk and improving implantation rates
  5. Supporting IVF and other assisted reproduction outcomes

Specific dietary and supplement strategies are given for the most common fertility conditions including PCOS, endometriosis, low AMH, elevated FSH and poor sperm parameters.

Treatment options

Evidence-based guidance is given on the role of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in improving fertility outcomes. I explain what the research evidence shows, which conditions respond best to Chinese medicine treatment, and how to combine natural and conventional approaches for the best possible results. Guidance is also given on western medical fertility treatments including fertility drugs and intrauterine insemination (IUI), with practical advice on how to approach these options.

If you would like personalised advice alongside reading the book, I offer online fertility consultations and treat patients at my clinics in Wokingham, Berkshire.
