How acupuncture relieves pain
How does acupuncture actually relieve pain — and why does it work when painkillers have failed? In this short animated video, I explain the mechanisms through which acupuncture produces genuine, lasting pain relief — from triggering the body's own natural painkillers to reducing inflammation and releasing tight muscles.
Key points from the video
In traditional Chinese medicine, pain is understood as stagnation — the obstruction of the free flow of qi (energy) and blood through the body's meridian channels and tissues. The classical principle states: "Where there is free flow, there is no pain; where there is no free flow, there is pain." Acupuncture relieves pain by stimulating specific points along the meridians to move qi and blood, clear stagnation and restore the body's natural state of free circulation.
Modern science has identified several mechanisms through which this occurs. Acupuncture triggers the release of the body's own natural painkillers — endorphins, enkephalins and dynorphins — from the brain and spinal cord. It modulates pain processing in the central nervous system by activating the brain's descending pain inhibitory system, reducing activity in the areas associated with the experience of pain. It also has measurable anti-inflammatory effects, relaxes hypertonic muscles and releases myofascial trigger points, and improves local blood flow to damaged tissue — accelerating repair and reducing the metabolic waste products that sustain pain.
These overlapping mechanisms explain why acupuncture is effective for such a wide range of pain conditions — from back pain and sciatica to migraines, frozen shoulder, knee pain and nerve pain. A landmark meta-analysis of over 20,000 patients confirmed that acupuncture produces genuine, lasting pain relief — not a placebo response — and NICE now recommends it for chronic primary pain.
