How acupuncture works

How does acupuncture actually work? There are two complementary answers to this question — one rooted in classical Chinese medicine theory, and one grounded in modern science. In the short animated video below, I explain both, and show how inserting fine needles into specific points on the body stimulates a healing response that restores balance and good health.

Key points from the video

In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture works by regulating the flow of qi (energy) and blood through channels called meridians that run throughout the body. Illness arises when this flow is disrupted. By inserting very fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points along the meridians, I stimulate a healing response that restores the smooth flow of qi and blood, rebalances the body and supports its natural capacity to heal itself.

Modern science has begun to confirm what Chinese medicine has observed for over 2,500 years. Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, triggering the release of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine — natural chemicals that reduce pain, improve mood and calm the nervous system. Research has also shown that acupuncture has measurable anti-inflammatory effects, regulates hormones via the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, and improves local and systemic blood flow.

These mechanisms together explain why acupuncture is effective for such a wide range of conditions — from chronic pain and fertility to anxiety, insomnia and menopausal symptoms.
